All means all
AUGUST 24, 2023

Principal Message

PIne Lane Crew,

We are now into the month of September and the year is in full swing! Thus far, we have been strongly messaging our school mission, CREW culture, and habits of character through our announcements and classroom Crew Circles.  We are now turning some of this work to our students to help with these messages.  4th grade is starting us off and for the next few weeks they are going to be focusing Leadership which we define this way, “We inspire those around us to excellence. We strive to build trust by developing confidence in ourself and others. We think outside the box to solve problems and empower others by modeling the habits of character.” We are very excited to see 4th grade’s impact on our crew through these efforts.

I’d also like to thank you all for your fundraising effort this fall.  Our students did an amazing job and we were able to raise $20,000+ profits that will go toward helping to provide furniture updates across the school.  A huge thank you to Pine Lane Educational Alliance (PLEA) for leading these efforts.  Tonight, we are also holding our first public PLEA Meeting at 6pm in the North Campus Innovation Lab.  We will have some child care available during the meeting if you need. Please know that all parents/guardians and staff members are considered members of PLEA and we hope that all of you can make it out tonight to better understand our priorities for the year and how you can help out in our efforts.

Lastly, on August 8th, the Board of Education voted to place a Bond and MLO on this November ballot this year. As more and more information comes out you may have many questions about how this impacts you personally and our schools. This website: https://funding.dcsdk12.org/ will be a great resource for you to better understand how funds from these measures would be used to improve the educational program for Douglas County School and Pine Lane specifically.

We wish you all a great afternoon and weekend!

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

Attendance matters!  Daily attendance and engagement in learning is essential to student success at all grade levels.  Colorado law directly connected to attendance focuses on compulsory school attendance, truancy and school finance. Important student attendance definitions of rates and terms include:

Truancy is an unexcused absence.  The rate is calculated by dividing the reported Total Student Days Unexcused Absences by the Total Student Days Possible.

Habitually Truant (Student Count): A student is counted as habitually truant if the student has four unexcused absences in one month and/or 10 absences in one school year.

Chronically Absent: A student absent 10 percent or more of the days enrolled during the school year is chronically absent. All absences are included – unexcused, excused, and suspensions.  The rate is the percentage of students enrolled who are chronically absent.

CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM:

Attendance is important at all levels within the K-12 education system.  For preschool, students with good attendance develop skills and good attendance habits to prepare for kindergarten. By third grade, children who missed too much of kindergarten and 1st grade fall behind in reading.  Chronic absenteeism in middle school is a warning sign that students are on a path to disengagement and dropping out. In ninth grade, attendance is a clear predictor, more than test scores, that a student will leave before completing high school.

Improving school attendance and addressing chronic absenteeism aligns with the Colorado Department of Education's (CDE) mission and strategic plan.  In Colorado in 2021-22, 1 in 3 students was chronically absent.
